Former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida is assisting Royce White, a former NBA player, in his effort to join the WNBA. White announced his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft through a letter from Gaetz and his law firm, Gaetz Law, sent to the league’s office.
Gaetz shared with Fox News Digital that his firm is offering legal counsel to White, who aims to be a trailblazer for Black transgender lesbians hoping to play in the WNBA.
White’s draft declaration, authored by Gaetz, emphasizes that White now identifies as a transgender woman and asserts her eligibility under the 2026–2033 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the WNBA and the WNBPA.
Initially appointed by President Donald Trump as Attorney General after the 2024 election, Gaetz withdrew from the nomination process due to strong bipartisan opposition and prior allegations affecting his confirmation prospects. Gaetz refuted all accusations, insisting they were false and politically motivated, citing the absence of any charges or lawsuits against him.
Currently, Gaetz is focused on assisting White in her pursuit of joining the WNBA. White has expressed determination to pursue legal action should she go undrafted, citing potential discrimination if not selected.
White challenged the league to clarify its stance on gender eligibility and men participating in women’s sports. She asserted her intent to declare for the draft regardless of the league’s policy statements, seeking fair treatment as a previously transgender-identifying athlete.
The eligibility criteria of the WNBA concerning gender has been under examination recently. White’s earlier loss in a primary bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota against Michele Tafoya followed a past general election defeat to Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.
