Former NBA Player Royce White Declares for WNBA Draft

3 minutes ago 0

Royce White, a former NBA and college basketball player, has officially announced his intention to enter the WNBA Draft. The announcement was confirmed by documents, obtained by Fox News Digital, that were signed last Monday and sent to the WNBA League office. Former U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz, serving as White’s legal counsel, signed the notice.

In the declaration, it is stated that Royce White identifies as a transgender woman. According to the 2026–2033 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the WNBA and the WNBPA, White affirms eligibility for selection based on this identification. The document further confirms White’s compliance with eligibility requirements, including age and collegiate eligibility parameters.

“As of signing this declaration, I identify as a transgender woman,” White declared.

White, who played for the Power in the BIG3 league, expressed strong feelings about inclusion and representation in a statement to Fox News Digital. “FBA Trans Lesbians matter and we have a right to exist. We have a right to be included and follow our dreams. Thank you to all the Americans that are supporting me, it does not go unnoticed,” White remarked.

This news came shortly after another former NBA player, Enes Kanter Freedom, announced intentions to declare for the WNBA Draft. White has expressed belief that only a clear stance from the WNBA could resolve the ongoing debate over male participation in women’s sports.

Legal action remains a possibility if White goes undrafted and unsigned, citing potential discrimination concerns. White articulated a desire for fair treatment, emphasizing the importance of equal opportunity as a Black athlete who sometimes identifies as a transgender woman.

Although White’s NBA career was brief, with limited playtime for the Sacramento Kings, he was notable in college basketball for Iowa State, leading his team in various statistics during the 2011-12 season. He also recently pursued a political career, finishing behind Michele Tafoya in the Minnesota Senate primary race.

Both White and Freedom’s announcements have sparked further conversation on the topic of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has been vocally opposed to biological males participating in women’s sports, leading to rallies both supporting and protesting her stance.

Reporter Jackson Thompson covered this story extensively for Fox News Digital, exploring political and cultural sports issues with a focus on investigation. His reporting has been recognized by governmental bodies and major media outlets.
