A.J. Brown recently encountered a familiar situation when his current team, the New England Patriots, conducted joint practices with his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, during training camp. Brown joined the Patriots after a challenging 2025 season for both himself and the Eagles’ offense. Philadelphia traded him for future draft picks amidst indications of a strained relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Despite more than two months since his transition to New England, Brown’s rapport with Hurts became a topic of discussion this week. During the Eagles-Patriots practice on Wednesday, Brown revealed that the two have not communicated since his team change. “No,” Brown replied when asked if he had spoken with Hurts after leaving the Eagles. While discussing the situation, Brown maintained positivity in his comments about his former teammates.
“Honestly guys, none of that stuff even matters, man. You all should want to report something positive. You know asking the question is going to turn negative,” Brown stated.
Hurts echoed similar sentiments, showing warmth toward Brown. “I’ve got a lot of love for him and always have,” Hurts mentioned.
Brown acknowledged the possibility of reconnecting with Hurts during the practices in Foxborough. During his time with the Eagles, Brown established records with 1,496 receiving yards in 2022 and 1,456 in 2023. After Philadelphia’s wild-card round exit at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers in January, Brown expressed a desire for a change. Sources indicated his frustration included not being targeted enough against zone coverage.
Throughout the 2025 season, Brown’s comments on social media and media sessions showed irritation with his offensive role. He interacted with former teammates Saquon Barkley and Cooper DeJean during practice breaks. Brown completed all six passes aimed at him from quarterback Drake Maye in drills but missed a catch against cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.
Brown shared that while forming chemistry with Maye has its challenges, he recognized the quarterback’s potential. “There’s definitely been some challenges, but he’s special and makes my job a lot easier. Just learning how he sees the game and getting on the same page,” Brown noted.
Although Brown participated in the joint practice, he maintained his respect for Philadelphia while focusing on New England. “It’s love. I won a Super Bowl ring with them. It will always be love no matter how anyone feels. I love Philly and I will always love Philly but I’m here now,” Brown affirmed.
The Eagles will start their regular season at home against the Washington Commanders on September 13. The Patriots will face the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on September 9 to open their 2026 campaign.
