Driven to Excel, Abby Inman Shines as Stevenson Volleyball’s Key Player

Last season, Abby Inman, an outside hitter for Stevenson, ranked among the top players in Lake County. Yet, she aimed for more. “As soon as my junior season wrapped up, I dove into workouts at our school’s gym, taking full advantage of its extensive facilities,” Inman explained. “I pursued private lessons with coaches from Sky High volleyball club, securing a spot on their elite team. These efforts were crucial in gearing up for my senior season.”

At 5 feet 11 inches, Inman’s dedication became evident over the summer, as noted by Stevenson coach Tim Crow. “She was a standout in summer league play, clearly among the best on the court,” Crow remarked. A powerful Inman could elevate the Patriots, who recorded a 24-13 overall and 6-1 conference tally, surpassing last year’s second-place finish in the North Suburban Conference and advancement to the Class 4A sectional semifinals. Inman achieved 328 kills and 270 digs last season, earning all-conference selection and all-state honorable mention. Her first stint as team captain provided invaluable experience, honing her leadership for her third varsity season.

“Familiar with our practice routines and the team’s focus areas during tough times, I was also able to lead and encourage my teammates,” Inman shared. “This was my first captaincy in any team or club. I discovered that leadership is about fostering success in others and consistently supporting the team.” Senior right-side hitter Audri Linnane emphasizes Inman’s reliability. “Abigail can consistently deliver under pressure, securing points when they matter most,” Linnane noted. “Her aggressive style, strategic placement, and improved power make her vital to our team.”

Inman values her team, having switched focus from five years of tennis to volleyball in seventh grade. “I cherished volleyball for its team dynamics,” she said. “Tennis felt solitary, prompting my yearning for camaraderie. The friendships and competitive spirit volleyball offers are incredible.” Starting in high school on Stevenson’s freshman A team, she evolved into a six-rotation outside hitter, adapting to the new setting. “Initially, my goal was to hit hard,” she reflected. “But in school volleyball, I learned that strategic play—like tip and roll shots—positions us to win more effectively.”

Even as a freshman, Inman’s skills impressed coach Crow. “We recognized her potential early on,” Crow recalled. “Her unwavering focus is remarkable, making her one of the most concentrated players today.” He continued, “Abby has consistently improved significantly each year, and she is looking exceptional.”
