Ohtani Nears Return to Two-Way Play; Dodgers Provide Injury Updates

Shohei Ohtani made progress on Saturday toward his comeback as a two-way player for the Dodgers. The star pitcher and hitter, who last took the mound on July 3, threw 30 pitches during a live batting practice session to catcher Will Smith, also in rehabilitation. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted positive feedback from coaches, stating, “We’re getting there. So, today was a good day.”

Ohtani appeared nearly back to form, exchanging light-hearted moments with Smith, such as when he caused an infield pop-up. He is expected to pitch another live session before considering a return to the rotation.

“I think if it were up to Shohei, he’d be in a game in a few days,” Roberts remarked. He emphasized the importance of coordinating with both Ohtani and the training staff before proceeding.

Roberts added that Ohtani’s knee issues, which led to his pitching hiatus, are resolved. Ohtani has adapted his mechanics, reducing stress on his knee. “That’s more of the pitching department,” Roberts explained, “but the land — being closed versus opening up slightly — relieved some knee pressure.”

Meanwhile, center fielder Andy Pages is considering surgery following a fractured left hand hit by a 100-mph sinker from Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler. Pages is set to miss about four weeks, despite surgery. “I think they’re probably leaning towards some type of surgery,” Roberts shared. Regardless, Pages is expected to return at full health before the season concludes.

Tyler Glasnow is set to start on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves with no limitations. Justin Wrobleski is expected to fill a relief role upon returning from forearm inflammation, offering two or three innings.

Edwin Díaz, recovering from neck inflammation, will initially pitch in lower-pressure situations before resuming as a closer. “It’s more of getting him back healthy,” Roberts commented, “then putting him in situations to rebuild confidence.”

Will Smith continues to progress, benefiting from practice alongside Ohtani. “Getting Will in the batter’s box to take at-bats is just good to see from both those guys,” Roberts affirmed.
