U.S. health officials are investigating a food-poisoning outbreak connected to alfalfa sprouts that has impacted individuals across 15 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 55 cases nationally, with four people requiring hospitalization.
State officials highlighted the outbreak, which particularly affected Minnesota and Wisconsin, noting more than three dozen cases in these areas. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), out of 34 individuals interviewed, 26 had consumed alfalfa sprouts.
The outbreak is unusual because it involves multiple germs: salmonella and different strains of E. coli. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) can cause symptoms like stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea and may lead to serious complications such as acute kidney failure. Salmonella infections often result in diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps.
Health officials have identified alfalfa sprouts from Everything Sprouts, a grower based in Minnesota, as the possible source. These sprouts, sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands, reached grocery stores and restaurants. Despite the outbreak, Everything Sprouts has not issued a recall.
Last year, the FDA sent a warning letter to Everything Sprouts after inspections uncovered concerns such as a leaking roof causing water to drip onto sprouts and workers wearing improper smocks. Attempts to reach the company for comment have been made.
