Rapid Growth of Hawk Fire
First detected at around 11:23 a.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, the Hawk Fire expanded aggressively throughout the day. Washoe County officials reported that the fire reached approximately 10,500 acres by evening.
About 400 personnel from various agencies engaged in efforts to combat the blaze, which was driven by strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation.
Lombardo’s emergency declaration underlined the threat to homes and urged residents to heed evacuation orders promptly.
Location and Impact
The fire is affecting Washoe County, northeast of Verdi and northwest of Reno. Significant impact is expected near Peavine Mountain and the Somersett area, with Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue noting its movement towards populated zones.
Evacuation orders intensified throughout Saturday. New mandatory evacuations were issued for the Somersett community and parts of northwest Reno. An evacuation shelter was set up at Hall 4 of the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
Details on evacuation orders affecting households were not consolidated, but multiple neighborhoods faced immediate evacuation orders or warnings.
Regional Wildfire Effects
Other fires in California, such as the Bug Fire, have implications for firefighting resources due to proximity and smoke transport. The Bug Fire impacted over 93,000 acres along the Nevada-California border.
Although these fires are distant from Reno, Nevada residents might encounter poor air quality if smoke travels east. This situation strains firefighting resources and emergency management systems.
