Tragic Crash at Kansas Soccer Field: Dispatch Audio Reveals Response

1 hour ago 0

New dispatch audio has surfaced from the day a vehicle allegedly drove into children and spectators at a Kansas soccer field. This audio captures the initial reaction of first responders to the incident on Saturday. Dispatchers labeled the scene as a ‘mass-casualty incident’ at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita.

The victims were 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson. In total, 10 others were injured, including five children. A 34-year-old woman driving the pickup truck was released without charges.

Why Was the Driver Released?

Police have not confirmed if they will press charges against the driver, initially detained at the scene. On Sunday, authorities released her pending toxicology results and an inspection of her Chevrolet pickup truck. Her two children were with her, one playing soccer at the complex.

Investigators spoke with her, more than 30 witnesses, and her children. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office advised on her release.

Reports show 31 minutes of dispatch communications outlining emergency response. First responders attended to at least 11 people described with varying degrees of injury. The incident was a ‘Level 3 mass-casualty incident’: a vehicle hitting pedestrians. One responder mentioned a 5-year-old victim sustained multiple injuries yet was fully responsive.

Over 30 minutes in, another victim was located on the field.

City Safety Measures

The City of Wichita will install temporary barriers and evaluate security around Stryker Sports Complex. Police will be on site next weekend, joined by mental health professionals to support affected families.

McPherson Mayor Jim Loving issued a statement: ‘This town grieves with the families. We support you and pray for recovery. Thank you to the bystanders and first responders.’

Wichita Police confirmed the investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as they become available.
