Chicago Public Schools Welcome Students on First Day of Classes

Thousands of children returned to classrooms for the first day of school on August 24, 2026, in the Chicago Public Schools district. The day was marked with enthusiasm as students arrived at various schools across the city.

At Leland Elementary, located in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, teachers and staff rolled out a red carpet to welcome students. Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the celebration, extending a warm welcome to the students. The event also featured smiles and greetings from educators as they embraced the new academic year.

Ashli Reynolds assisted her son, Ashton, as he prepared for his first day of second grade at Harold Washington Elementary in Chicago’s Burnside neighborhood. Ensuring her son was ready, she helped him with his backpack and shared in the excitement of starting a new chapter.

Maria Del Rocio Rodriguez managed the morning routine by fixing her daughter Ximena’s hair while Omar, 12, and Valeria, 4, ate breakfast. These preparations took place before their first day at school and highlighted the family’s readiness for the year ahead.

Maria Del Rocio Rodriguez also guided her daughters, Valeria and Melissa, out of the mobile classroom at Matthew Gallistel Language Academy. There, they learned that the first official day of preschool wouldn’t start until Tuesday. Paraprofessionals Lucia Serrano and Zayra Cabrera were present at the doors, assisting with preparations.

Mayor Brandon Johnson added energy to the day by dancing through the hallways of Roswell B. Mason Elementary School, located in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood. Teachers and staff lined the corridors, offering welcoming gestures to the students returning for their first day.
