Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, has filed a new impeachment resolution targeting President Donald Trump. Green has focused on impeachment efforts multiple times during Trump’s presidency. The recent filing accuses Trump of being a significant threat to the United States’ democratic republic and its Constitution.
The resolution claims Trump has violated Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution, which mandates a president to faithfully execute office duties and defend the Constitution. It specifically accuses him of misusing presidential powers by directing the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as aggressive, quota-driven forces. The resolution alleges these agencies operated with secrecy and impunity, committing and covering up civilian killings, including those of Renée Good, Alex Pretti, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero.
Al Green expressed concern that Trump’s actions were turning the United States into an authoritarian regime, normalizing unjustified killings. In response, White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis criticized the resolution as contributing to a surge in assaults against law enforcement officers. She praised the efforts of ICE and CBP, acknowledging their role in arresting dangerous criminals and claimed President Trump achieved a significant decrease in violent crime.
Despite opposition from the Republican-majority Congress, Green persisted. In a letter to Trump, he emphasized the importance of expressing disapproval, even if Congress does not approve impeachment articles. Green has served in the House since 2005 but lost a Democratic primary to Rep. Christian Menefee.
This is not Green’s first attempt to initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump. He has filed multiple resolutions throughout Trump’s time in office. Although the House impeached Trump twice during his first term, the Senate did not convict him in either case. The second vote took place after Trump had left office.
