The Chicago Cubs have shown impressive performances in the National League, even though they trail in their division. This highlights how exceptional the Brewers have been. A persistent issue for the Cubs this season is pitching. Despite acquiring several pitchers, the playoff rotation remains uncertain. Their reliance on home runs poses concerns about their postseason progression.

Clay Holmes may be the Cubs’ best bet to start a playoff series. Acquired from the Mets, Holmes has posted strong stats: a 5-6 record, 2.49 ERA, and a 1.11 WHIP. His innings pitched stand at 68.2 this season. Holmes excelled in his last two starts, allowing just one earned run over 12 innings. In facing the Diamondbacks with the Mets, he conceded two earned runs over 5.2 innings.

On the Arizona Diamondbacks side, Ketel Marte’s situation created some buzz recently. Reports suggest Marte’s return to the lineup, which could be crucial as Arizona aims for a Wild Card spot. Marte transitioned from inexplicable absence to injury, now cleared for action.

The Diamondbacks’ performance often hinges on their pitching staff. Their current starter, Brandon Pfaadt, has delivered commendable performances. With a 3.39 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP this season, Pfaadt moved from starting to bullpen duties, improving his game. Over the last two months, he allowed just 11 earned runs in 55 innings. His recent outing, however, was less impressive with five earned runs over 5.2 innings.

Pfaadt previously faced the Cubs, allowing two earned runs over 2.1 innings, with Cubs hitters managing only a .165 average against him.
