Cleveland Guardians’ pitchers achieved an impressive feat on Saturday night by striking out a record 21 Chicago White Sox batters in nine innings. This completed their comeback victory from a 2-0 deficit in the American League Division Series, ultimately winning Game 5 with a score of 2-0.
Starting pitcher Gavin Williams was outstanding, striking out 12 of the 21 batters he faced. He pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, issued two walks, and hit one batsman. Williams’ performance was bolstered by a significant play from Jose Ramirez, who hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. This pitch was remarkable for being the lowest hit for a postseason home run since at least 2008, measuring only 8.88 inches off the ground. It’s the lowest of Ramirez’s career.
Following Williams’ strong start, Cleveland’s bullpen maintained momentum. Erik Sabrowski, Evan Gaddis, and Cade Smith handled the final outs, striking out nine batters collectively. Sabrowski faced one batter and struck them out, while Gaddis and Smith together struck out eight.
The Guardians now prepare for a matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Championship Series. This marks Cleveland’s second appearance in this round over the last three seasons. The Rays recently secured a sweep against their AL East competitors, the New York Yankees.
The White Sox encountered difficulties all season, with a high strikeout frequency, ranking fifth in the league. On Saturday, their strikeout rate reached a staggering 63.6%, substantially higher than their regular season average of 24.1%.
Despite losing the first two games in the series on their home turf, Cleveland turned the tide by winning three consecutive elimination games. The upcoming ALCS in Florida will see the winner advance to contest either the Los Angeles Dodgers, trying for a championship third time in succession, or the Milwaukee Brewers, who aim to upend the reigning champions with their small-market team.
