Trump Renames Lake Ontario Amid Trade Dispute with Canada

1 hour ago 0

President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Canada by signing a new executive order to rename Lake Ontario. The lake, which borders New York and Canada, will be called Lake America. This decision is part of Trump’s ongoing dispute over tariffs.

On Thursday, Trump directed federal authorities to implement the name change for Lake Ontario immediately. However, there are several administrative procedures that must be completed first. A similar initiative occurred last year when Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

We have a gulf, and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean, Trump remarked during the signing event in the Oval Office.

Trump criticized Canada as the motivation behind the renaming. He stated that Canada is the worst in trade negotiations, accusing them of feeling entitled. This name change follows unsuccessful trade discussions and Trump’s announcement of a new 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods, further intensifying the trade conflict with Canada. In retaliation, Canada has introduced its own counter-tariffs.

These actions are likely to increase the cost of goods for Americans, which are already elevated due to the ongoing conflict with other countries like Iran. The situation has led some Republicans to openly disagree with Trump’s approach. Among them, Senator Susan Collins of Maine, currently in a competitive reelection campaign, described the tariffs on Canada as a mistake.
