Marathon Team Inspires with Unique Journey

Jamie Shinneman embraces carbs in his breakfast routine before tackling long training runs in Noblesville, Indiana. These runs can stretch up to 20 miles, where he pushes his wife, Amy Shinneman, in a specialized racing wheelchair called a ‘duo bike.’ Jamie drives the team forward, while Amy provides direction; together they are a ‘Duo Team.’

Since 2019, they have completed four marathons. For Amy, who can’t run independently, this is a noteworthy achievement. Born with a neuromuscular disease, diagnosed as Bethlem myopathy in 2018, she experiences progressive muscle weakness and relies primarily on her wheelchair. On marathon courses, the wheelchair becomes her portal to discovery.

‘She’s seeing parts of the world she’s never seen before,’ Jamie shared. Inspired by these journeys, he continues to push forward, staying connected with Amy.

This remarkable partnership began after Jamie, an accomplished runner qualifying twice for the Boston Marathon, suggested they switch to duo racing. His proposal was influenced by a race wheelchair they discovered at the Boston Marathon Expo in 2019. Initially, Amy resisted the idea due to apprehension about being observed. As a spectator, she was comfortable; embracing the athlete role challenged her perceptions.

‘I had to adjust to the idea that people could cheer for me,’ Amy expressed.

With louder cheers accompanying each race, they aim to complete all eight Abbott World Marathon Majors, having triumphed in Berlin, Boston, Chicago, and New York. The Sydney Marathon on August 30 is next, with London, Tokyo, and Cape Town ahead.

Amy reflects on her path, transforming doubt into self-belief with each finish line crossed, boosting her confidence for life’s challenges.

The Shinnemans aspire to show others with disabilities their potential through their journey and nonprofit, Team Humbly Courageous. Jamie emphasizes encouraging people to live with humility and bravery.

In honor of their fifth marathon major in Sydney, they aim to raise $26,000 for their nonprofit. Ten percent will support the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The rest will fund a racing wheelchair for a Duo Team in need.

Jamie expressed hope for inspiring others to use their natural talents, encouraging mutual support and courage.
