Transgender Athletes and the Debate in Alberta Women’s Golf

Recently, biological female golfers in Alberta, Canada, have found themselves overtaken on leaderboards. This shift follows a 2025 decision that allowed transgender athletes to compete in women’s golf, resulting in significant wins by trans golfers.

Transgender athletes Veronica Ivy and Rachel Elser have clinched multiple women’s golf championships this summer. Ivy, previously a standout in women’s cycling in Great Britain, also contributed to a team victory in the 2026 Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Get better, ladies. Dr. Veronica Ivy stated in response to criticism from those opposed to transgender individuals competing in women’s sports. Ivy, holding a position as an associate professor of philosophy and women’s and gender studies at the College of Charleston, expressed her stance on social media.

Women & Girls Alberta, an organization advocating for the rights of women in Alberta, has voiced opposition to Ivy and Elser’s participation. The group argues for the protection of female golfers under provincial legislation. However, according to Alberta Golf’s policy, Ivy and Elser comply with the rules. The policy requires male-to-female transgender individuals who have transitioned after puberty to provide medical documentation of undergoing gender reassignment for at least one year.

Since the rule change, the impact has been noticeable. Ivy shared on Instagram about her return to competitive golf, a sport she started at age three. She has since achieved multiple golf championships in the province.

Ivy commented in OutSports that claims of her victories are overstated, suggesting the competition level is low. Despite her success, Ivy has not reached the top 10 in the Canadian national mid-amateur championship, emphasizing that she is simply participating as a good competitor.

On Rachel Elser’s golf background, there is limited information beyond a 2025 women’s club championship win. Nonetheless, trans athletes have secured notable achievements in Alberta’s women’s golf scene.
