Macklin Celebrini, entering his third NHL season with the San Jose Sharks, has secured a major contract extension that positions him among the league’s top earners. The five-year, $94 million deal, commencing in the 2027-28 season, offers Celebrini an average annual value (AAV) of $18.8 million. This significant investment from Sharks GM Mike Grier indicates Celebrini’s importance to the team.

Despite having the potential to demand higher compensation, Celebrini chose to accept a slightly lower amount than the maximum possible under NHL regulations. According to Sportsnet, the top payment a player can receive annually equates to 20% of the team’s salary cap, allowing Celebrini to seek up to $20.8 million per year. However, he prioritized the team’s future competitiveness over personal gain.

“I want to ensure that the salary figure is sensible for the team, especially considering NHL salary cap trends,” Celebrini stated. “By maintaining some financial flexibility, we can create a favorable environment for our team’s development. My commitment to this team and organization is strong.”

This approach keeps $2 million available for team growth, aiding the Sharks’ quest to become a leading force in the NHL. Celebrini’s willingness to prioritize collective interests suggests strategic foresight and team loyalty.
