Evan Kung’s Dramatic Victory at St. Lawrence: A Historic Bassmaster Event

The 2026 Bassmaster Elite Series finale at the St. Lawrence River made history with nine anglers crossing the 100-pound mark, the most Century Belts awarded at a single smallmouth event. Evan Kung emerged as the standout, winning the tournament with a dramatic finish.

Evan Kung entered the St. Lawrence event with his career on the line. Throughout the week, he consistently performed, building a significant lead. On Championship Sunday, Kung secured the win with a standout catch of 6 pounds, 13 ounces, earning the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award. “It was a crazy week,” Kung stated, emphasizing his focus on catching big fish after securing his spot in the Elite Series.

He used a drop shot pattern with a prototype bait from Great Lakes Finesse, yet to be released. Kung’s final day began trailing leader Trey McKinney by one and a half pounds. Kung’s final weight of 27-12 pushed him to a 109-9 total, leaving McKinney, who needed 26-8 to win, two pounds short.

Kung expressed his gratitude after the win, thanking his support system comprising sponsors, friends, his mother, and his girlfriend’s family. He stated, “It’s extra special to have them all here to see it.”

Trey McKinney finished second with 107-9, also claiming the Progressive Bassmaster Angler of the Year title. Tucker Smith and Cory Johnston also broke into the Century Club, each achieving some of their heaviest career totals.

Cole Sands achieved a personal milestone, spending extensive time scouting to secure a Century Belt. He likened the fishing approach to trout fishing, focusing on drop shots and minnow baits, which he credited for his success without any complaints. Other anglers rounding out the Century Club included Brandon Cobb, JT Thompkins, Bryant Smith, and Fisher Anaya. Although Easton Fothergill narrowly missed the Century Club, the event underscored the St. Lawrence River as a premier bass fishing location.

With nine Century Belts awarded, this competition set a historical benchmark. The event showcased the potential of the St. Lawrence River, confirming its status as an extraordinary bass fishing venue. Although Evan Kung’s name will remain on the trophy, the collective performance of all competitors and the remarkable fishery emphasized the significance of this tournament week.
