Colorado Rockies’ Cole Carrigg Apologizes for Unsportsmanlike Gesture

Colorado Rockies rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg faced consequences after an unsportsmanlike gesture during a game against the Atlanta Braves. The incident occurred during the Rockies’ 2-1 loss at Truist Park.

During the game, the Rockies were holding a 1-0 lead when Carrigg missed a fly ball from Michael Harris II. This error resulted in a two-run double, allowing Atlanta to take the lead. As Braves fans reacted to the play, Carrigg responded inappropriately with a gesture toward the crowd.

The Rockies’ manager, Warren Schaeffer, addressed the incident, expressing disappointment in Carrigg’s actions. He stated, “Cole made a mistake, and he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization. We don’t stand for that.” Schaeffer also mentioned that Carrigg would be temporarily removed from the starting lineup.

“Everybody makes mistakes. It is just one that he has to learn from. We will not put up with that here,” Schaeffer added.

Despite being benched, Carrigg entered the game as a pinch hitter and later played at center field and shortstop. He recorded an 0-for-2 performance with a strikeout.

Following the incident, Carrigg expressed remorse and took full responsibility for his actions. “First, I apologize to my teammates and the organization. That’s not how I want to represent us,” Carrigg admitted. “That’s inexcusable on my part.”

He emphasized his dedication to giving his best in each game and the importance of maintaining a positive representation. Acknowledging the passion of Braves fans, Carrigg noted the gesture was unacceptable and assured it would not happen again.

Unsportsmanlike conduct can lead to consequences, but Carrigg’s willingness to accept responsibility shows his commitment to improvement.
