Tanner McDougal’s Rise and White Sox Roster Moves

Tanner McDougal recently shared insights gained from fellow pitcher Davis Martin, who was undergoing injury rehab at Triple-A Charlotte. Martin provided valuable advice on managing struggles and maintaining composure during challenging times. McDougal aims to incorporate this advice as he progresses to the major leagues. The Chicago White Sox called up McDougal from Charlotte with roster expansions. The Sox also added outfielder Tommy Pham from Charlotte and designated pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment.

The White Sox acquired Pham from the Philadelphia Phillies, with cash considerations contributing to the trade. Pham previously played for the Sox during part of the 2024 season. Before the recent game against the Houston Astros, Pham emphasized open communication with Phillies General Manager Preston Mattingly, who informed him of several teams, including the White Sox, interested in trading for him.

This year, Pham’s journey back to the Sox involved time in various minor leagues, including Single-A St. Lucie with the New York Mets, the Florida Complex League Orioles, Triple-A Norfolk (Baltimore), the Florida Complex League Phillies, and Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia). Additionally, Pham appeared in nine games with the Mets from April 13 to April 27.

Reflecting on returning to former teams, Pham identified the Sox, Cardinals, and Mets as clubs that brought him back. He expressed admiration for Chicago’s passion for the South Side team and noted the city’s energetic atmosphere.

During a recent game at Rate Field in Chicago, catcher Edgar Quero interacted with McDougal in the sixth inning against the Cincinnati Reds. This was McDougal’s major league debut, with McDougal rated as MLB.com’s No. 7 prospect in the White Sox organization. He allowed one run, walked three, and hit a batter in one-third of an inning in his debut.

Reflecting on the experience, McDougal acknowledged the pressure and expectations surrounding a major league debut. “As a kid, you build it up to be big and grand,” he said. Although disappointed by the outcome, McDougal quickly embraced the realization of achieving his lifelong dream of playing in the major leagues.

Looking ahead, the Sox’s starting pitcher for Wednesday remains undecided. Davis Martin is a likely candidate, as he has been on the injured list since August 14 due to a blister on his finger. Meanwhile, the Sox’s manager Will Venable shared updates regarding catcher Kyle Teel’s rehabilitation progress. Teel is recovering from a left ankle sprain, which he sustained on July 20.

Venable emphasized a cautious approach, ensuring Teel is not rushed back from rehabilitation. He underlined the importance of adequate preparation before returning to the major leagues, acknowledging that Teel had limited playtime due to various injuries throughout the year.
