Trump Nominates Hung Cao as Navy Secretary

President Donald Trump has officially nominated acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao to permanently lead the service. Trump described Cao, a former Navy special operations officer, as a ‘true warrior’ and called for the Senate to swiftly confirm him.

Over the past four months, Cao has served as acting secretary, overseeing the Navy and Marine Corps. The Trump administration aims to expand U.S. shipbuilding and bolster the military’s maritime power.

‘I am pleased to nominate a true warrior, Hung Cao, to become the next Secretary of the Navy,’ Trump stated on Truth Social.

President Trump emphasized the importance of having leaders like Cao in charge, ensuring the Navy and Marine Corps remain a powerful force.

During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Cao testified about the Navy’s posture in relation to the Defense Authorization Request for FY2027 and future defense plans.

Trump urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process, highlighting Cao’s successful tenure as acting leader.

The Senate needs to confirm this warfighter ASAP, so he can continue the fantastic work he has been doing over the past 4 months, Trump wrote.

Cao expressed gratitude for Trump’s support and outlined ongoing priorities, such as shipbuilding and homeland defense. He acknowledged the challenges posed by global tensions, particularly concerning Taiwan and Iran.

Cao, a retired Navy captain with a 25-year career including special operations and combat deployments, attempted a political career, unsuccessfully running for Congress and later challenging Sen. Tim Kaine in 2024. Trump’s endorsement of Cao during the 2024 campaign highlighted Cao’s military credentials.

If confirmed, Cao will formally oversee the Department of the Navy, including both the Navy and Marine Corps.

The White House and the U.S. Navy have not yet commented on Trump’s announcement.
