Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have made a significant discovery regarding weight loss. They identified an oral compound known as TOFA that facilitates weight loss by enhancing energy expenditure in obese mice, rather than suppressing appetite.
Study Findings
Published in Science Advances, the study revealed that TOFA decreased the body weight of mice by an average of 18%. Importantly, this did not affect their food intake or cause a notable loss of lean mass. Unlike injectable weight-loss drugs such as semaglutide, which reduce food consumption, TOFA maintains lean mass and avoids gastrointestinal side effects.

Mechanism of Action
TOFA targets cells directly by inhibiting enzymes responsible for lipid production, including triglycerides. It also activates receptors that encourage fat burning and energy production.
Combination Treatments
When combined with obesity medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide, TOFA helps achieve greater weight reduction and improves blood sugar, insulin, and triglyceride levels. Mice treated with TOFA maintained their weight post-treatment, contrasting with those treated solely with semaglutide, who rapidly regained weight.

Study Limitations
Researchers note that experiments were conducted solely with male mice. Future studies will explore the effects on female animals. TOFA has yet to be tested on humans, leaving questions about appropriate dosage and potential side effects.
Dr. Pristas advises caution, suggesting that promising early data should be weighed against potential hidden side effects. Despite the complexities involved in lipid manipulation, the treatment holds potential clinical benefits.
