Inferno Erupts at Bali Restaurant Following Balloon Explosion

2 hours ago 0

A beachside celebration in Bali, Indonesia, turned disastrous when a balloon burst into flames inside a notable restaurant, leading to a severe fire. The incident occurred at the Chez Gado-Gado restaurant in Seminyak, a resort area, with a video showing the dramatic spread of flames. An Australian teenager was hospitalized due to burns sustained in the accident, according to reports from 7News.

Witness Tara Borelli from Sydney reported to News.com.au, “There was a 70th birthday celebration, and two balloons were placed on the table. However, when a waitress attempted to light the birthday cake candle, it got too close to the balloon.” Upon contact with the candle flame, the balloon popped and exploded, Borelli explained. “We felt the heat from the pop.” She described the terrifying scene, where she took her daughter and cousin and ran to the beach for safety.

The restaurant’s straw roof quickly caught fire, and within minutes, the entire establishment was engulfed. Witness Paul Cole recounted the chaotic moment to 9News, noting that the flames spread quickly, causing panic. “Like a firecracker… people were screaming, crying, and running,” Cole stated.

According to The Bali Sun, the Badung Fire and Rescue Service spent over two hours extinguishing the fire. Thankfully, no casualties occurred, as confirmed by First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya of the Denpasar Police, who indicated the fire likely started from a balloon ignited by a candle flame.

The intense blaze overwhelmed initial efforts to control it by the restaurant staff using fire extinguishers, as explained by Inspector Jaya. The fire quickly expanded to the thatched roof area, making extinguishing efforts ineffective.

Another observer told 9News: “There were balloons, a lot of explosions… explosion and explosion, it was just, yeah, it was terrible.” Witness Joe Xuereb echoed the confusion at the scene, describing the situation as “bedlam,” with people uncertain of how to react immediately as the fire began.

The restaurant, Chez Gado-Gado, is now temporarily closed, according to an announcement on its website.
