On Sunday night, a 19-year-old resident of Beverly Hills was accused of murder following a violent encounter in an alleyway. This incident left a man dead and residents of the affluent community trying to understand the events that unfolded.
Conoray Lawantara was apprehended by the Beverly Hills Police Department on Monday. He faced a murder charge on Wednesday, according to the L.A. County district attorney’s office. The confrontation occurred just before midnight on Sunday. Police responded to reports of an altercation on North Palm Drive, located in a residential area to the east of the Golden Triangle business and shopping district. Officers discovered a man suffering from neck wounds and transported him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The victim’s identity remains undisclosed. Brigette Barbie, a local resident, reported hearing moaning and witnessed a man, presumed to be homeless, bleeding heavily on the ground. Law enforcement arrived shortly after and began questioning Lawantara.
“I didn’t reach for him first; he reached for me, his hand went to my leg,” Lawantara is heard explaining in a video recorded by Barbie. “And at that time I produced my CCW, it’s a 3.9-inch knife.”
CCW stands for ‘concealed carry weapon.’ When an officer asked about the weapon’s location, Lawantara indicated it was ‘on the ground right there.’ He asserted that the man continued to attack him even after he drew his knife, resulting in Lawantara suffering a stab wound and a bitten finger. He was later taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Barbie mentioned that Lawantara recently moved to the area and appeared agitated, as the man was going through trash that evening. She described the act as excessively violent.
Neighbors in the area expressed their anger and confusion over the incident. Barbie questioned the aggressive nature of the encounter: “We want to know who the hell this guy is that moved in here. What made him do this so savagely?”
As of the latest updates, Lawantara has not been arraigned. He remained in the hospital as of Monday evening. The Beverly Hills Police Department withheld further comments on Lawantara’s status, the victim’s possible homelessness, or additional details about the altercation.
