IIHF Updates on Russian and Belarusian Participation

1 hour ago 0

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) provided updates on the involvement of Belarusian and Russian athletes in their upcoming world tournaments. This includes the World Junior Championships set for next month.

The IIHF announced that Belarus will not participate in the games. On the other hand, the federation stated it is “taking the necessary steps required” to comply with the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) ruling that allows Russian participation.

The IIHF expressed its disagreement with the CAS decision regarding Russian teams. However, they emphasized their commitment to abide by the ruling and explore measures to maintain the stability and future of international ice hockey. This involves ensuring conditions are met to safeguard the championships and uphold the sport’s integrity.

The federation commented, “The IIHF must work within the applicable framework while upholding its responsibility to preserve international competition and protect the sport as a whole.”

In light of the CAS ruling permitting Russian teams to compete in upcoming championships, the IIHF announced intentions to consult with all affected Member National Associations (MNAs), including discussions with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. These talks aim to find a constructive path forward for global ice hockey.

Hockey Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed that Russian players would not be permitted in the forthcoming World Juniors taking place in Alberta next month.

In recent times, Russian teams did not participate in events like Olympic hockey, the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off, or any competitions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

President Vladimir Putin criticized organizations for preventing Russian athletes from competing. He accused them of enforcing restrictions that violate legal and democratic principles.

Several nations, including Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Latvia, and Denmark, announced boycotts against games involving Russia amidst ongoing conflicts in Ukraine. Germany, set to host the 2027 men’s world championships, also hinted at withdrawing if Russian participation continues.

Key sponsors like Strauss have threatened to sever ties following Finland’s initiative to rally support against playing Russia. If Russia takes part in the upcoming tournaments, it will mark their return to the World Juniors since 2021. However, they have not claimed a gold medal since 2011.
