Controversy Surrounds LSU and Lane Kiffin Over SEC Recruitment Rule

ESPN reports say Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has called for SEC commissioner Greg Sankey to act against LSU. The concern is over player recruitment involving those under NFL contracts this summer.

The SEC recently introduced a rule banning member schools from signing former NFL players. Violators face severe penalties, including coach suspensions for half a season, fines up to 50% of the annual budget, and loss of voting rights in league matters.

In a letter to Sankey, Carr expressed his intention to use legal avenues to ensure compliance, specifically focusing on LSU. He highlighted LSU’s interest in signing tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, both recently released by NFL teams.

College athletics are for college athletes only, and we are grateful the SEC has taken swift action to maintain that standard, Carr wrote, according to ESPN. The rules cannot be ignored to benefit one coach, institution, or program, and we refuse to stand by while that happens.

Recent court rulings have granted temporary restraining orders (TROs), which allow NFL rookies who failed to make rosters to return for another college season. Carr’s stance introduces further complications for Sankey and the conference.

A Louisiana state judge ruled the SEC cannot penalize teams for signing players previously under NFL contract. Former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos, after a stint with the Miami Dolphins, joined Texas Tech under these circumstances.
