Golden State Warriors’ Situation with Kristaps Porzingis: Salary Withholding and Trade Possibilities

1 hour ago 0

The Golden State Warriors are dealing with a complex issue involving veteran center Kristaps Porzingis, whose future in the NBA is still uncertain. The team is reportedly delaying salary payments to Porzingis, who is due $20 million for the current season, while they assess potential trade options for the 31-year-old player.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, the Warriors claim Porzingis is not meeting his contractual duties as he is not participating with the team. Despite the suspension of payments, the Warriors may still be able to trade his contract before the NBA’s Feb. 11 deadline.

Porzingis’ uncertain status with the team casts doubt on his future in Golden State. He had signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with the Warriors during the offseason after being acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in a trade in February. However, health issues have kept him away from the team.

On October 21, the Warriors announced that Porzingis would not be involved with the organization for the immediate future, offering no further information on his medical situation or possible return. Charania reported earlier that Porzingis was contemplating retirement from professional basketball due to persistent health problems.

This uncertainty has led the Warriors to search for ways to trade his contract ahead of the trade deadline. Although Porzingis is due $20 million this season, only $3 million of that amount for the 2027-28 season is guaranteed. This aspect of his contract might appeal to teams aiming to cut future financial commitments.

Charania suggests that a team acquiring Porzingis could potentially trade another contract in the deal and pursue a buyout to increase roster flexibility. Porzingis played in just 15 games for the Warriors last season, with averages of 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Initially, the Warriors hoped he would play a key role in the frontcourt alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. However, his ongoing absence has required the team to rethink those plans. With the trade deadline nearing and uncertainty surrounding Porzingis’ playing career, Golden State faces significant decisions about managing a contract that could still have value even if the veteran never plays again.
