The Los Angeles Police Department, along with several other law enforcement agencies, responded quickly to an illegal street takeover early Saturday in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles, near Gardena. The takeover involved numerous vehicles and attendees.
According to reports, the streets around South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard were crowded with vehicles. Police confirmed to OnScene.TV that they had towed approximately 160 vehicles, made dozens of arrests, and found six guns at the scene.
Tim McOsker, the councilmember representing the district that includes Harbor Gateway, commented on the situation to OnScene.TV. He stated that officers were actively impounding vehicles, booking drivers, and citing other participants. Children present at the event were taken to a nearby station for their parents to pick them up.
Around 3 a.m., Los Angeles police surrounded the intersection to prevent individuals from fleeing. McOsker highlighted that this location frequently experiences street takeovers, especially on weekends during the summer. The police were prepared for the activity coinciding with the start of Labor Day weekend.
Law enforcement vehicles effectively blocked the intersection to ensure the operation’s success, noted McOsker. Footage provided by OnScene.TV displayed agents from Homeland Security Investigations, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, present at the scene. When questioned about their involvement, McOsker expressed uncertainty about their role, emphasizing that the operation was primarily a local police effort to curb street takeovers.
