In a surprising political move, Democratic Representative Haley Stevens endorsed Republican candidate Mike Rogers for the Michigan Senate race, opting for support outside her party. She endorsed Rogers over her fellow Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, which provoked strong reactions from within her party. Prominent Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have criticized the endorsement.
Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign reported that it raised over $2.4 million in just one day following Stevens’ endorsement. This influx of donations, from over 65,000 contributors with an average contribution of $36.74, marked a record for the campaign. Notably, nearly 29,600 of these donations were from first-time contributors. The fundraising spike occurred after Stevens, a more moderate figure, chose to support Rogers.
Stevens explained her decision in a social media video, emphasizing her continuing Democratic allegiance but disagreeing with El-Sayed’s backing from radical political streamer Hasan Piker. She stated, “As Michiganders head to the polls, the momentum behind Abdul’s campaign has never been stronger,” reflecting the resilience of El-Sayed’s campaign despite her endorsement of Rogers.
Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away and he’s right. And that’s why I’m endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today,Stevens said in her video shared on the platform X.
The support for Rogers, a candidate aligned with former President Trump, has led to a wave of denouncement from Democrats. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer labeled it “a despicable betrayal,” reinforcing the party’s solidarity behind El-Sayed. Curtis Hertel, the Michigan Democratic Party Chair, joined the chorus, stating that Stevens had renounced her core beliefs.
Despite these developments, El-Sayed maintained focus on his campaign. Following Stevens’ endorsement, he reassured reporters of his dedication to voter interests and policy, distancing himself from Piker, whose controversial statements have drawn national attention.
