Cisneros fatally stabbed Erin Piacenti, a Bank of America executive, in Times Square. This occurred during Piacenti’s first week back at work after maternity leave. Cisneros, reportedly wielding knives in each hand, did not comply with police orders to disarm and was shot when advancing on the officers.
The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation must probe all deaths involving police officers under state law. Saritha Komatireddy, a Republican candidate for Attorney General, is urging for more significant measures to prevent such incidents by addressing mental health issues. “We know about many dangerous individuals due to their mental health problems,” she stated, suggesting that current investigations do not tackle the core issue.
A spokesperson for James argued that Komatireddy’s comments aim to exploit the tragedy for political advantage. They emphasized the legal requirement for the office to investigate police actions potentially linked to deaths.
New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, known for his critical stance on the police, praised officers who intervened to stop Cisneros. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted Cisneros had no arrest history in the city but had previously been involved in mental health incidents. In March 2019, she attempted suicide, and in March 2018, was found acting erratically due to intoxication.
