Ed Sheeran began his solo concert in Philadelphia with remarks on the situation in Gaza, describing it as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.” He expressed a desire for his music and performances to focus on unity and humanity but felt compelled to address the recent controversies.
Sheeran’s supporting acts withdrew after Macklemore was removed from the tour for pro-Palestinian comments. Sheeran commented, “This is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel anymore.” He highlighted the devastating impact on civilian lives in Gaza and pointed out systemic injustices in the West Bank.
Macklemore, initially slated as Sheeran’s U.S. opener, was dropped following his comment “Free Palestine” during a New Jersey show. The decision linked to Robert Kraft, owner of New England Patriots, led supporting acts, including Irish band Beoga, Danish band Lukas Graham, and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, to back out.
Sheeran stated during the concert he was engaging with diverse individuals to find ways to assist victims and emphasized the importance of learning more about the issue. Meanwhile, Macklemore announced a donation of $1 million to Palestinian relief efforts, urging Kraft to do the same. Kraft and Sheeran each pledged $2 million without specifying the beneficiaries.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Philadelphia queried the decision to remove Macklemore, raising concerns about free speech and artistic expression. Police prepared for potential protests during the concert.
Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered near the concert venue ahead of the event. Some fans expressed disappointment at the absence of opening acts and concerns about the protests, while others supported Sheeran, recognizing limitations on his influence in the situation.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel assured that protests would be managed to allow for both expression of opinions and enjoyment of the concert. Security measures were in place to ensure the safety of all involved.
