Congressional Candidate Cait Conley’s Stance on Democratic Socialists and Campaign Strategy

Democratic congressional candidate Cait Conley recently appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she addressed her campaign strategy concerning her association with key figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Conley stated she would not campaign alongside these individuals but did not explicitly state whether Democrats should reject the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The influence of the DSA in New York has emerged as a significant issue in Conley’s attempt to unseat Republican Congressman Mike Lawler. Lawler’s campaign has tried to connect Conley to the socialist wing of the Democratic Party. During her interview, Conley responded, “No, Dana, I’m good up here making the case to the voters in the New York 17th Congressional District.” Despite this, Conley did not directly answer whether Democrats should reject the DSA.

Conley’s avoidance of directly addressing the DSA issue has been criticized by Lawler’s campaign manager, Ciro Riccardi. Riccardi pointed out Conley’s reluctance to engage in debates with Lawler and accused her of failing to distance herself from the DSA. He remarked, “Cait Conley’s refusal to disavow Zohran Mamdani and the DSA is disqualifying. She is just as extreme as the rest and that was exposed today for all to see, including embracing impeachment.”

Lawler previously challenged Conley to six debates after her Democratic primary victory. Conley’s campaign agreed to participate in two debates hosted by local networks. CNN anchor Dana Bash further referenced calls from Rep. Tom Suozzi for Democrats to confront the DSA. Conley, instead of agreeing or disagreeing with these calls, spoke on the political division within parties. She urged unity and focus on bridging divides to combat extremism and corruption in Washington.

Suozzi has explicitly stated that Democrats need to address the DSA’s impact and reject its policy goals. He stated to Fox News Digital, “I don’t ascribe to any of those ideas at all, and I think that there’s very little support for those ideas.” Lawler’s campaign highlighted Conley’s association with the Democratic Party’s progressive faction, following congratulations from Ocasio-Cortez for her primary win.

The DSA advocates for abolishing ICE, ending detention and deportations, and suggests redirecting police funding as part of broader steps towards abolishing police and prisons. This agenda also includes universal rent control, public social housing, and universal healthcare funded by the government.

Conley, an Army veteran who served on President Joe Biden’s National Security Council, won the Democratic primary in June. She faces incumbent Lawler in the Hudson Valley election, a contest seen as pivotal for House control.

Fox News Digital reached out to Conley for a comment but did not receive an immediate response.
