Lake Ontario Renaming Sparks Tension Between U.S. and Canada

The White House bolstered Trump’s initiative to rebrand New Mexico as ‘New America.’ An image on Trump’s Truth Social account showed the state’s name altered, with ‘Mexico’ crossed out and replaced by ‘America.’ The White House shared this image on its verified social media account, indicating it might not reflect actual policy changes.

Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ is recent. It followed disputes over tariffs between Washington and Ottawa. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum was tasked with updating the Geographic Names Information System to reflect the new name. Subsequently, digital map services like Google and Apple updated their maps for U.S. users.

A poll found most Americans disfavor Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario. The poll underlines the contentious nature of the renaming among the public. Trump signed the executive order for Lake Ontario’s renaming during an Oval Office event, showcasing his determination in trade-related matters.

In previous actions, Trump signed orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America.’ These actions demonstrate his use of executive orders to affect geographical renaming for federal purposes. However, his authority does not extend to renaming states.

New Mexico’s name has historical significance, originating from Spanish explorers who referred to the region as ‘Nuevo México’ in the late 1500s. It retained this name upon joining the U.S. and becoming a state in 1912.

President Trump’s proposal to rename New Mexico has sparked conversation but lacks formal continuation from the White House. Both Trump and New Mexico’s government have not pursued any official measures regarding the state’s name alteration. The White House and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office have not provided comments on this plan.
