Federal investigators are in South Florida following a deadly incident at Miami International Airport. An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway and crashed on Sunday afternoon, bursting into flames.
Witnesses have begun sharing their experiences. Grace Mercado was in a vehicle with her partner when he remarked on a loud noise. She looked up from her phone and saw the plane had gone off the runway, crossed a Miami-Dade street, and stopped. She described the noise as unlike anything she had ever heard, saying it felt like a shake.
Mercado expressed confusion about the event, comparing it to a movie scene. Initially, no first responders were visible, but they arrived swiftly soon after.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR), over 60 units and approximately 200 personnel responded. The first units arrived within seconds. The crash resulted in five fatalities and five injuries. MDFR issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims and their families.
In the aftermath, Mercado saw only smoke and no movement near the wreck. The event seemed surreal to her.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash. The victims’ identities remain unreleased.
