Bryce Underwood’s Future as Michigan’s Quarterback in Question

Heading into the college football season, few anticipated Michigan’s season opener against Western Michigan to stir concern about quarterback Bryce Underwood. Yet, the game resulted in a narrow escape for Michigan, with a 13-12 victory sealed by Underwood’s last-second Hail Mary pass to wide receiver JJ Buchanan.

In the game’s dramatic finish, Underwood initially overshot a Hail Mary attempt, sending the ball beyond the end zone. However, after reviewing the play, officials allowed an extra second on the clock. This decision gave Underwood the chance to deliver a decisive pass that secured Michigan’s victory.

Despite this moment of success, head coach Kyle Whittingham expressed reservations about Underwood’s role as QB1. “He’s our QB right now, but it’s not something that’s indefinite,” Whittingham stated. “We need to see improvement in various areas, not just from Bryce. Everyone must perform consistently to maintain their position.”

During the game, Underwood completed passes for 170 yards and rushed for 47 yards, contributing to both of Michigan’s touchdowns. However, he also threw one interception, reflecting areas that require growth.

Underwood, a sophomore, arrived at Michigan following a historic NIL deal valued at approximately $12 million. While benching a quarterback with a salary of $4 million per year is daunting, Whittingham seems prepared to communicate his expectations through public channels.

In his freshman year, Underwood’s performance included 11 touchdown passes alongside nine interceptions. His continued development is crucial for his future role on the team.
