The NFL and team owners are rejecting Aaron Rodgers’ idea of scheduling all international games in one week. According to Front Office Sports, the league and its owners do not support the plan Rodgers mentioned recently. A source explained, “You’d be competing against yourself” if all international games occurred in a single week.
Additionally, the sources denied Rodgers’ claim that such an arrangement had been considered during labor negotiations for the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NFL Players Association. A source stated, “That’s bizarre. I’m quite sure we never talked about a 16-game season with two byes and 16 international games in one week.”
Rodgers, who led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a victory over the New Orleans Saints in France on Sunday, discussed his vision of having all 32 NFL teams play internationally during the same week. He shared his thoughts after the game, saying, “There was talk about doing a week – an international week – where you had games in 16 different places, and you just added an extra bye week.” Rodgers mentioned that it would allow for 16 regular-season weeks, with two bye weeks, one dedicated to international games.
Rodgers believes this would be beneficial for the sport. Nonetheless, the owners wanted to expand to 17 games for additional revenue, highlighting player safety concerns. He commented, “It would’ve been phenomenal for the game… it would’ve been nice.”
This year, the NFL has scheduled nine international games, spread out over nine different weeks. The upcoming game is on November 8, featuring the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons in Spain.
