LIV Golf Faces Uncertainty as Key Players Leave

36 minutes ago 0

LIV Golf is experiencing significant turmoil as it loses key players. Sergio Garcia recently announced on social media his intention to compete in the DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour. He also mentioned he is considering a return to the PGA Tour. This decision comes as the DP World Tour announced it will no longer allow LIV players to participate in its events.

Garcia expressed his long-standing connection to the DP World Tour, describing it as an integral part of his career. He aims to play for Team Europe in the Ryder Cup in Ireland, a goal that requires membership in the DP World Tour. However, the new restrictions further diminish Garcia’s chances of joining the Ryder Cup. Garcia made his last appearance for Team Europe in 2021 before signing with LIV, where he holds six wins in ten Ryder Cup appearances.

Several high-profile golfers, such as Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Louis Oosthuizen, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Reed, have already left LIV Golf. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) halted financial support in April, redirecting funds to domestic initiatives and managing regional conflicts. Consequently, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan resigned from LIV’s board.

LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month, after spending billions between 2021 and 2026. The league owes substantial amounts to top players like Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Cam Smith. A proposed restructuring, dubbed ‘LIV 2.0,’ seeks to relaunch the league in 2027 with support from BC Partners. However, Rahm has rejected these terms.

The league now faces layoffs, delayed payments to contractors, and legal disputes with the Premier Golf League. After shifting the originally-scheduled championship weekend, LIV’s calendar remains uncertain.
