Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Return: No Official Royal Duties

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the UK, but their official roles as working royals remain unchanged. This decision aligns with Buckingham Palace’s firm stance since the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

According to a letter issued on behalf of King Charles III, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not resume any official responsibilities. The letter, as confirmed by Fox News, states, “In January 2020, the Duke and Duchess stepped down from representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family.” The couple enjoys financial independence and privacy, a position that will continue to be respected.

The letter clarifies that changing residence won’t alter their royal status. As the letter affirms, “There is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. Their charitable work is entirely personal and conducted privately.”

Buckingham Palace confirmed that Harry and Meghan, who moved back with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will remain apart from royal responsibilities. Their focus will continue to include their private commercial and charitable interests.

This statement was issued by the Lord Chamberlain to relevant officials in the government, military, and personal representatives of the King across the country. Although contacted, representatives for Harry and Meghan have not commented.

The family settled back in the UK in late August, and their children are enrolled in British schools, set to start in September. They intend to reside privately outside London, though the exact location is unspecified.

Royal expert Hilary Fordwich explains, “While returning, they are not regaining official royal roles. There was no agreement to any ‘half-in, half-out’ arrangement, with such attempts having previously been thwarted.” According to former butler to King Charles III, Grant Harrold, personal reasons such as spending more time with Harry’s father might have influenced their return.

Despite returning, the couple will be scrutinized by both the public and the Palace. Their movements will remain under watchful eyes as public interest in their personal and charitable efforts continues.
