Goodlander Advances to General Election in Democratic Stronghold

Rep. Maggie Goodlander, representing the Democratic Party, secured a victory in her primary election, setting the stage for a general election in a Democratic-leaning seat in New Hampshire. This district spans from Massachusetts to the Canadian Border and mainly covers the western part of the state.

Goodlander, whose husband is former Biden National Security Adviser Jacob Sullivan, won her initial race for this seat in 2024. She took the place of retiring Rep. Ann Kuster. Although Republicans have had control of the governor’s office, Democrats have seen congressional successes since 2013. Before that, the seat was primarily held by Republican Rep. Charles Bass, with brief interruptions by Democrats.

Goodlander’s main challenger in the Democratic primary was State Rep. Paige Beauchemin from Hillsborough. An independent candidate is also in the race for the general election. Lily Tang Williams emerged as the winner of the four-way Republican primary and will compete against Goodlander.

Jacob Sullivan’s critical roles in the White House drew attention, particularly during the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021. He was also involved in the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and in managing relations with China.

In her campaign, Beauchemin argued from a progressive stance, suggesting Goodlander was not progressive enough during her first term. The district, more rural than its counterpart in New Hampshire, includes cities like Pittsburg.

Changes are underway in New Hampshire’s political landscape, as Rep. Chris Pappas steps down from his House seat to run for Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s Senate seat. Born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Pappas has worked in New York and Washington for Fox News since 2013.
