Controversy Over Mayor’s Participation in 9/11 Memorial Event

Criticism from Council Member Joann Ariola

Republican Council Member Joann Ariola criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani for releasing documents related to the September 11 attacks. She labeled the move as “performative” during a press conference. Ariola claimed it was an attempt to distract from the needs of 9/11 victims and their families.

On Tuesday outside City Hall, Ariola and others tried to block Mamdani from attending upcoming memorial events. In a Newsweek interview, she said Mamdani’s actions were timed to shift media focus away from a press conference with 9/11 families.

Controversial Attendance at Memorial Events

Several Republican figures, including former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, opposed Mamdani’s attendance at the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Former Governor George Pataki criticized the mayor’s associations, stating that Mamdani should distance himself from controversial figures like Hasan Piker.

An online petition against Mamdani’s attendance gathered over 102,000 signatures. It cited his affiliations with certain individuals as the reason for opposition. However, some 9/11 families, like Elizabeth Miller, supported his presence, stating that he should be allowed to honor those lost.

Democratic leaders and Mamdani’s 2025 rival, Curtis Sliwa, endorsed his attendance. The mayor has committed to attending Friday’s event.

Document Release by City Officials

On the same Tuesday, city officials launched an online portal with about 170,000 pages of records related to the 9/11 aftermath. The documents include air quality and health reports.

The portal aims to provide greater transparency about the attacks and their impacts. Officials plan to add more documents over the coming months. The initiative is supported by a $34 million budget allocation for maintenance and additions.

Comedian Jon Stewart, advocating for first responders, criticized the past lack of transparency at the portal’s launch. Representative Jerry Nadler also praised the move, highlighting long-ignored health risks.

Ariola’s Continued Criticism

Ariola remained vocal about the document release timing, describing it as “deliberate” and “scripted.” She highlighted issues with ongoing health concerns, mentioning the numerous illnesses related to the attacks.

During a City Hall gathering with approximately 50 people, Ariola referenced the petition signatures. She accused Mamdani of diverting attention from the memorial event. She emphasized the mayor’s controversial associations and criticized his lack of disavowal of certain views.

The petition was organized by Giovanni Galante, whose wife died in the attacks. Ariola’s office has supported the petition, aligning with families who oppose Mamdani’s attendance.

Air Quality and Health Concerns

The new database reveals that asbestos was found at Ground Zero months after the attacks. The records contradict past assurances that the air was safe, exposing risks associated with asbestos, a harmful mineral.

Documents also cover city liability discussions, environmental testing, and clean-up operations post-9/11. The portal concludes a legal battle for access, following a settlement with 9/11 Health Watch.

Expected Attendees at the Ceremony

The September 11 event in New York City will feature former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden. Vice President JD Vance will represent the Trump administration, with President Trump expected at the Pentagon ceremony.
