One year has passed since Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed at Utah Valley University. Since his death, the movement he created has split into two factions, each claiming his legacy.

A Divided Movement

Charlie Kirk, age 31, was shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking in Orem, Utah. After a 33-hour search, authorities arrested Tyler Robinson, then 22. Robinson now faces the possibility of the death penalty. Kirk’s legacy has been commemorated by some as a martyr for free speech and Christian values. Others see him as a prophet warning against foreign entanglements.

The dominant, pro-Trump branch of the movement elevates Kirk as a sacred figure. Vice President JD Vance, Erika Kirk (Kirk’s widow), and Turning Point USA lead this faction. On October 14, 2025, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him “a martyr for truth and freedom.” During the 2026 State of the Union address, Trump asserted Kirk was “violently murdered” and martyred for his beliefs.

Erika Kirk, now the chief executive of Turning Point USA, has employed religious language to describe her husband’s role. At the Fox Nation Patriot Awards on November 6, 2025, she spoke of “spiritual warfare,” affirming that Kirk never backed down from spiritual challenges. In December at AmericaFest, she endorsed Vance for the presidency in 2028.

Diverging Views

A divergent faction within the movement uses Kirk’s memory to argue against the administration’s deviation from the “America First” doctrine. The U.S. joined Israeli strikes on Iran in June 2025 and launched a broader operation in February 2026. Former Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene highlighted a video of Kirk criticizing regime change in Iran. The video gained millions of views, with Greene asserting, “We voted for America First and ZERO wars.”

Greene resigned from Congress in January 2026, citing fears she might face the same fate as Kirk. She described her resignation as part of a purge of “America First voices.”

Tucker Carlson has echoed related claims, stating Kirk disliked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In contrast, Senator Ted Cruz recalled Kirk’s concerns over rising antisemitism on the right.

Steve Bannon, a former Trump strategist, argued that Kirk opposed regime change against Iran. The White House has not clarified whether Kirk supported recent military strikes, although many who worked with him claim he would have backed them.

Conflicting Legacies

Former Turning Point colleague Candace Owens has shaped Kirk’s legacy in unique ways. She suggested Kirk was moving away from Israeli ties before his death and mentioned shared beliefs in metaphysical experiences. Erika Kirk also noticed unexplained events, interpreting them as signs of her husband’s presence.

Kirk’s foreign policy stance was more intricate than portrayed by either faction. While he opposed foreign interventions, he supported Trump’s strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025. Both wings of the movement use his record to support their positions.

Concrete tributes to Kirk include political initiatives like calling for a Kirk statue in the Capitol and minting silver coins with his image. Some states have proposed establishing a “Charlie Kirk Day.”

The Campus Impact

The debate over Kirk’s assassination has extended to college campuses, sparking discussions on free speech. Sean Stevens from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education suggested the tragedy underscores the dangers of partisanship and censorship.

Internal Conflict

Conservative figures like Ben Shapiro have criticized internal conspiracies and accusations, labeling some leaders as “frauds.” Turning Point USA plans a memorial at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2026, titled “Freedom Built to Last,” with notable speakers attending.
