Rey Mysterio’s Journey in Wrestling and His Role in AAA’s Triplemania 34

Before the 619 became a popular finishing move and before Rey Mysterio became a household name in WWE, he earned his first opportunities in the ring with AAA. Mysterio participated in the inaugural Triplemania event in 1993. At that time, he was known as Rey Misterio Jr. and teamed up with Volador and Misterioso to face Tony Arce, Vulcano, and Rocco Valente, collectively known as Los Destructores.

More than thirty years later, AAA is part of WWE and Mysterio serves as the general manager of AAA. He headlines Triplemania 34 Night 1 in Las Vegas. Speaking at the event, Mysterio expressed how special this moment was for him, given his new role as GM and his history with AAA.

“It’s a very special moment for me in so many ways,” he told OutKick Dropkick. “The fact that I’m now the new GM of AAA. The fact that AAA was the first company that opened the doors for me and I was at the very first AAA show back in ’92. I was at the very first Triplemania in ’93. So, to see this come full circle and to be in the position where I’m at now, it’s been an amazing ride.”

Mysterio has faced many challenges as general manager, including handling issues with the wrestler Omos. Omos had been suspended from AAA after injuring Galeno and attacking Mysterio. Despite being a paid spectator, Omos attacked Mysterio again with the help of Dominik Mysterio, which set the stage for their rivalry to culminate at Triplemania.

Reflecting on facing Omos, a 7-foot-3 giant, Mysterio displayed confidence owing to his history of competing against larger opponents.

“I’ve felt his power. Very strong dude. Very intimidating,” he said of Omos. “But it doesn’t faze me. I’ve seen giants before. I was just saying a minute ago, from the moment I started training at 8 years old, I was the smallest kid in the class. The youngest kid after me was probably 16, 17. They were obviously much bigger than me. I’ve always been in the ring with bigger people, bigger opponents, so, it doesn’t faze me. I’m not scared. I’m motivated.”

Mysterio emphasized the importance of maintaining authority as GM of AAA, insisting that no superstar or Luchador would be able to intimidate him or disrespect authority.

If Mysterio loses the match, Omos will be reinstated to the AAA roster; if he wins, Omos will be barred from competing in AAA.

Triplemania 34 Night 1 takes place at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday night, while Night 2 is set for Sunday at Arena CDMX. The events start at 10 p.m. ET and can be viewed on YouTube.
