Political Controversy Surrounds NYC Mayor at 9/11 Memorial

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani participated in the unveiling of a 9/11 Memorial Wall at One Police Plaza. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, De Niro said, “I don’t see why he shouldn’t come.” He argued that Mamdani, as mayor, should attend unless proven otherwise ineligible. The mayor’s presence stirred controversy due to his past statements regarding the NYPD during the George Floyd riots.

“I understand their pain, but I think he should be there,” De Niro expressed, acknowledging why families might find Mamdani’s presence problematic.

De Niro also commented on the controversy around former President Donald Trump, urging people to vote and protect elections. His comments reflect his dissatisfaction with both political figures and media portrayal, as stated by entertainment commentator Christian Toto.

Tension remains high, with an online petition gathering over 100,000 signatures urging Mamdani to skip the memorial. The petition highlights Mamdani’s praise of figures with connections to terrorism and controversial statements by his associates.

Mamdani’s actions, such as giving a ceremonial pen to his chief counsel who represented a convicted al Qaeda member, have drawn criticism. Rafael Mangual of the Manhattan Institute suggested De Niro overlooked Mamdani’s troubling associations and comments about the police.

Critics, like Mary Marslender, argue Mamdani’s past calls to defund the police and connections with extremist voices are hard to ignore. Elizabeth Pipko criticized De Niro for defending Mamdani without knowing facts, hinting at a pattern of uninformed political commentary.

Efforts to contact Mamdani’s office for comment were unsuccessful. The situation highlights the complex interplay between city leadership and public perception as officials honor the memory of 9/11.
