Nashville International Airport is progressing toward a potential name change to honor the late country music star, Dolly Parton. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has unanimously voted 6-0 to start the process of renaming the airport in Parton’s honor. A final name is yet to be decided.
The airport authority stated, “While a final name has not yet been determined, we are working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated.” This vote marks an initial step, and more details will emerge in the coming months.

This move follows a previous push to honor Parton after her passing at age 80 last month. Earlier, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and the airport had announced plans in August to explore naming the airport after the beloved musician. The governor noted that Parton’s representatives appreciated the support and were open to discussing the proposal further.
Public support for the name change was substantial. A petition to rename the airport “Dolly Parton International Airport” garnered over 155,000 verified signatures. Parton’s musical achievements, philanthropy, and initiatives like the Imagination Library program made her one of Tennessee’s most celebrated figures.

In 2021, Parton asked Tennessee lawmakers to withdraw a bill proposing a statue of her at the state Capitol. She expressed gratitude but preferred to consider such honors in the future, leaving the door open for potential recognition after her time.
“I hope that somewhere down the road, several years from now or perhaps after I’m gone, if you still feel I deserve it, then I’m certain I will stand proud in our great state Capitol as a grateful Tennessean,” Parton once said.
The initiative to honor Parton reflects the deep connection she had with Tennessee, leaving a lasting impact through her contributions.
