Yemen’s Houthi rebels have taken over Mayun Island at the entrance of the Red Sea, serving as an alternative route for Saudi oil exports amid threats in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. A senior military official from Yemen’s government and a Houthi official confirmed the capture, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization to speak to the media.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, at the southern end of the Red Sea, is crucial for global shipping, with 12% of the world’s goods passing through. It holds significant value for Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally. A Houthi spokesperson stated that maritime navigation remains safe, except for Saudi vessels. Despite this assurance, the markets remain wary, with experts describing the Houthis as unpredictable.

Farhan Haq, a United Nations spokesperson, confirmed Houthi rebels seized a compound in Mokha that housed U.N. staff, who evacuated before the takeover, with no U.N. personnel currently in Mokha.

Saudi Arabia’s Oil Pipeline Precaution

Saudi Arabia has halted its major cross-country oil pipeline citing attacks as the reason for this precautionary measure. The East-West pipeline, essential for Saudi oil exports, has been pivotal since the Iran conflict began disrupting shipments in the Strait of Hormuz. The Saudi Energy Ministry did not specify the attackers. In response, Iraq launched an investigation into such attacks originating from Maysan province and dismissed a provincial commander.

The International Energy Agency notes a doubling of Saudi oil exports through the Red Sea since U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran in February.

Anthropic’s Yemen Activity Block

AI company Anthropic has blocked users in northern Yemen reportedly using AI for weapons development via smartphones. The company identified users employing AI models for advanced weapons systems such as ballistic and hypersonic missiles. While Anthropic banned these accounts, Iran denies arming Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who face a U.N. arms embargo.

The company reported attempts to develop guided rockets using mobile technology, though there’s no evidence of successful deployment.

Regional Talks and Military Actions

Iran plans a regional meeting with Gulf Arab countries in Oman to discuss managing ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing conflict has heavily affected this key waterway. Meanwhile, Israeli military activities in Lebanon have drawn attention with the destruction of Hezbollah-constructed tunnels on the Ali Taher ridge, funded by Iran. Residents reported feeling tremors from explosions as Israeli forces targeted these sites.

An Israeli strike in Gaza resulted in the death of a man and injuries to several others in Khan Younis, targeting a Hamas member, according to the Israeli military.
