Donald Trump’s Visit to Ireland: Diplomatic Meetings and Controversies

Donald Trump is set to arrive in Ireland on Saturday for a brief two-day visit. His itinerary includes meetings with Catherine Connolly, the Irish head of state, who has been vocal in her criticism of Trump in the past. Connolly, despite her opposition to Trump’s policies, has expressed willingness to engage diplomatically during his visit.

Although the Irish President does not dictate foreign policy, Connolly’s role is pivotal in representing Dublin internationally. Her influence is notable given the substantial Irish American community and the diplomatic interplay between Dublin and Washington. The likelihood of Trump meeting Connolly had been in doubt owing to her critical remarks about him, particularly around St. Patrick’s Day this year.

Connolly had previously remarked, “If he visits Ireland, I will meet and greet him, although I oppose his policies.”

Connolly’s Criticism of Trump

As a legislator and during her presidential campaign, Connolly has consistently criticized Trump. Her election as head of state in November 2025 hasn’t changed her stance. She has voiced skepticism regarding American trustworthiness, citing Trump’s unpredictable nature and his policies, such as imposing tariffs on nations including Ireland.

Connolly’s discourse included concerns about the war in Gaza. She has accused Trump of endorsing actions that she equates with genocide in the region, emphasizing the impact of U.S. strategies and support for Israel.

Connolly stated, “America is among countries we cannot trust, while the U.S. President supports Israel in trampling international law … reducing Gaza to nothing.”

Her critique continued around U.S. military maneuvers against Iran and broader international security issues. Connolly stressed Ireland’s need to speak against perceived abuses of power by Trump.

During a White House gathering, Trump mistakenly referred to Connolly using the wrong gender. He tersely remarked, “He’s lucky I exist, that’s all I can say.”

Trump’s Scheduled Activities in Ireland

Trump will arrive at Dublin Airport aboard Air Force One, proceeding to meet Connolly and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin separately in Phoenix Park, Dublin. He also plans to interact with Edward Walsh, the U.S. ambassador to Ireland. After completing the Dublin itinerary, Trump will head to County Clare’s Trump International Golf Links for the Irish Open, concluding his visit on Sunday.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald declares her party’s participation in planned protests against Trump’s visit. These demonstrations spotlighting U.S. policies over Gaza are expected to draw sizable crowds, including at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin.

The public and political allies anticipate Connolly to confront Trump about U.S. support for Israel, and settlement expansions in the West Bank. The Social Democrats highlight her advocacy for peace and international law, expressing confidence in her diplomatic engagements.
