Critics argue these carts contribute to traffic issues and illegal parking, with up to 500 now possibly operating around Rome, according to the Associated Press (AP). They have become a fixture near landmarks like the Colosseum, disturbing many local residents.

The golf carts may be quiet and take up less space, but they’re becoming a headache for locals due to their numbers.

Those in favor suggest that the carts are environmentally friendly since they produce no exhaust fumes, which helps preserve historical monuments. Pauline Frommer, a publisher of travel guidebooks, explains that Rome’s limited public transportation options have driven the demand for alternative modes of getting around.

The shortage of public transport routes arises because digging new subway stations often uncovers archaeological sites, necessitating further excavation work. This has paved the way for golf carts to fill the gap.

Amid complaints, Rome is considering regulating the use of golf carts. City officials are proposing rules that would limit their numbers, designate specific routes for tours, and stipulate who can operate them.

Deputy Mayor Eugenio Patanè has asked for more authority to control this widespread issue.

Frommer notes that cities worldwide are grappling with overtourism. In many popular destinations, the number of tourists surpasses the local population.
