Representative Chuck Edwards Apologizes Amid Censure Vote

Representative Chuck Edwards publicly apologized to his wife and family on the House floor as lawmakers prepared to vote on a resolution to censure him. Edwards expressed regret for causing his wife, Teresa, public embarrassment and scrutiny due to his actions toward two former female staffers. He also apologized directly to the women involved.

Edwards said, “I’m deeply sorry that my judgment and my actions put you in a position where you had to endure embarrassment, hurt, public scrutiny, and questions that no wife should ever have to face.”

These emotional remarks preceded the House’s overwhelming vote of 413-2 to censure Edwards. The House Ethics Committee concluded that Edwards engaged in “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward the staffers by giving lavish gifts, writing personal notes, commenting on their appearance, and inviting them to dinners and vacations.

While the committee found no evidence of sexual activity or propositions, it determined that his conduct created a hostile work environment and violated House rules on sexual harassment and unwanted advances. Newsweek reached out to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office for comment.

Despite his apologies, Edwards contested the Ethics Committee’s main conclusion. He admitted to poor judgment and regretted making the women uncomfortable but denied committing sexual harassment. “Regret is not an admission of sexual harassment,” Edwards stated, claiming his actions were based on perceived friendships.

The censure marks significant consequences for Edwards, who announced he would not seek reelection after “much prayer and reflection.” Although censure is a formal condemnation, it does not remove a member from Congress or affect their voting rights. This vote also highlights ongoing scrutiny of congressional handling of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior toward staff, with lawmakers considering reforms to ethics and workplace rules.
