Potential Fat-Burning Benefits of Blueberry and Grape Compound

Recent research indicates that a naturally occurring compound in blueberries and grapes might aid muscle cells in reducing fat stores. This research, conducted in Japan, focused on pterostilbene, revealing its potential for enhancing fat metabolism in mouse muscle cells.

Pterostilbene occurs naturally in blueberries, grapes, and various berries. It has been noted for its metabolic benefits, yet its influence on skeletal muscle was less understood until now. The study, published on September 1 in Food Bioscience, demonstrates that pterostilbene helps in breaking down accumulated fats within cells. Risk factors like high-fat diets, lack of activity, and aging can contribute to such fat buildup.

Excess fat in muscle cells can disrupt glucose and fatty acid utilization, increasing the risk of insulin resistance. Takakazu Mitani, the lead researcher from Shinshu University, emphasized the study’s implications for developing foods and supplements aimed at improving muscle fat metabolism.

The team tested various food-derived compounds, discovering that pterostilbene significantly reduced fat without affecting muscle growth. This compound seemed to safeguard PPAR-delta, a protein vital for fat processing within cells. This research lays groundwork for identifying additional compounds with similar benefits.

Though these results offer insights into dietary strategies that may combat obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic decline, further research involving humans and animals is necessary. Johannah Katz, a registered dietitian, noted the current findings are based on simplified cell models which don’t capture the full complexity of human metabolism.

Katz cautioned that while the study highlights a mechanism that could reduce fat accumulation, eating blueberries or taking supplements doesn’t automatically translate to fat loss. Blueberries and grapes offer multiple nutritional benefits, but this study does not definitively associate their increased consumption with reduced fat buildup in human muscles.
