Emma Peterson’s Path to Success with Mentor Lauren Kosecki

Emma Peterson of Geneva is making strides in her volleyball career with guidance from her coach, Lauren Kosecki. As a former Division I player, Kosecki is well-equipped to mentor Peterson as she prepares to play for Dayton University. Peterson values Kosecki’s knowledge, stating, “She’s easy to go to for anything.”

On Thursday night, Peterson showcased her talent, achieving 16 kills in Geneva’s 25-9, 26-24 win over West Aurora. Especially impressive was Peterson’s 10 kills in the second game. Geneva secured the win despite trailing 22-20, aided by Zori Malone’s six aces and six kills. West Aurora was paced by Natalie Mitchell, Paige Werve, and Aiyanah Vega, who contributed to the team’s tough fight.

From being a newcomer last season, Peterson has now emerged as a top attacker in the area, with 112 kills this season. Kosecki witnesses her progress, noting Peterson’s growing confidence and leadership skills. “We talked about her being a leader,” said Kosecki. “She’s really started to do that.” Peterson has been focusing on staying aggressive, even in challenging situations. She attacks rather than plays it safe, showing comfort both in the front and back rows.

Peterson’s aggressiveness was less evident during Geneva’s loss to St. Charles North earlier in the week. However, she took it upon herself, alongside teammates, to alter that for Thursday’s match. “Definitely something I’ve been working on is staying aggressive in tight matches,” Peterson remarked.

With Geneva initially leading 9-2 in the second game, West Aurora rallied back to lead 22-20. Their coach, Alyssa Farney, acknowledged the momentum shift, praising West Aurora’s fight and adjustment. “We made some changes and came out with a complete change in energy,” said Farney.

Facing a potential third game, Peterson delivered with two successive kills to equalize the score, followed by West Aurora errors that sealed Geneva’s victory. The first of these kills came from the back row, adding versatility and strengthening Geneva’s defense. “I think doing that a lot more will make it harder for teams to score on us,” Peterson reflected.
