Denny Hamlin Discusses Technology in Bass Fishing

Denny Hamlin believes forward-facing sonar might have gone too far in professional bass fishing. The NASCAR star, who recently took up bass fishing after buying a boat last winter, acknowledges the technology aids professionals but at the cost of traditional skills.

Hamlin expressed his views on OutKick OutDoors, stating, “I think the guys on the pro tour, it’s a little too much.” He detailed how the ability to find fish without overly relying on electronics is diminishing. Although beneficial for television with fishermen hauling in massive catches, Hamlin sees it as excessive.

The debate on this issue is growing, with major circuits in professional bass fishing already implementing measures to curb sonar’s influence. For the 2026 Bassmaster Elite Series, the use of forward-facing sonar is limited to five of the nine regular-season events, determined by coin flips. This results in a mix of traditional and technology-heavy tournaments.

Major League Fishing takes a different approach. It restricts the use of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar to one of three 2.5-hour competition periods per day. Anglers must declare their chosen period in advance, and sonar is deactivated during the other periods. MLF also limits competitors to two transducers of this type.

Despite these adjustments, Hamlin recognizes the advantages of such technology for novices. It helps him engage more effectively with the sport. His learning experience has been furthered by professional angler Chris Zaldain, who shows him casting techniques and bait handling, enhancing Hamlin’s fishing skills.

Fishing has become therapeutic for Hamlin, offering relaxation and teaching patience. He views it as a healthy outlet compared to more physically demanding hobbies like basketball and golf.

When asked about competitiveness, Hamlin admits feeling driven to outdo fellow anglers, echoing some competitive aspects from his racing career. However, he also enjoys fishing alone, preferring the solitude it offers over fishing with children, which can disrupt his fishing flow.

Meanwhile, Hamlin is venturing into new waters by purchasing an offshore boat, signaling a future interest in saltwater fishing. Although competitive instincts linger, fishing provides a getaway from his usual pace and pressures, something he finds refreshing.
